Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body.  It is often used to scan limbs, heads and spines, and increasingly for abdominal and pelvic scanning and MRI angiography.

SASH has two MRI scanner at East Surrey Hospital plus a mobile MRI scanner provided by Inhealth. Some referrals are taken by our partners at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital in Horley and Medical Imaging Partnership who run a variety of units in Sussex.

Opening times

Weekdays 8am – 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am – 6pm.

Imaging assistants are on hand to act as chaperones to patients, preparing them for the MRI and helping with aftercare.

Young children and patients who have difficulty remaining still are referred to St George’s Hospital in Tooting for an MRI scan, where they will be given an anaesthetic beforehand.

Although there is no general direct GP access to MRI, referrals are accepted where the examination has been indicated on a previous radiological report.
