Who are you: Michael Wyatt

Summarise your role: I am the strategic lead for inpatient length of stay at SASH. I provide strategic direction and leadership to service improvements, operational productivity and operational delivery that enhance patient outcomes, reduce length of stay and reduce avoidable hospital pressures.

What do you find challenging about your role: Delivering sustainable improvements in environments of heightened and lasting pressure is difficult. This is the position of East Surrey Hospital and the systems in which it operates. Creating space for clinical and operational colleagues, and health and care partners, to co-design and implement meaningful change amongst daily firefighting and operational requirements can be tricky.

What do you find rewarding: Knowing that the purpose of my role is to improve outcomes for people and the Trust, offering wider benefits for partners, is incredibly motivating and rewarding. Ensuring people don’t spend longer than necessary in hospital is better for them and those who do need acute care – so everybody wins! It is also critical to support our staff who work tirelessly to keep people safe every day. With the length of stay down, we can close additional surge beds and relieve additional pressure for teams.

What do you enjoy outside of work: Definitely holidays to switch off and unwind. This year I am hoping that I finally make it to South America!
