The Paediatric dentistry department is a consultant-led service providing:

  • Specialist assessment for children
  • Dental treatment for children including use of sedation and general anaesthetic
  • Dental management of children with severe learning or physical disability, complex medical histories, extensive dental decay, complex dental trauma, significant dental phobia, soft tissue conditions, dental anomalies, and periodontal (gum) problems
  • Multidisciplinary assessment of children requiring joint Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic input.

SurgeonMr Thayalan Kandiah, specialist and consultant in paediatric dentistry

BSc, BDS (Wales), MFDS (RCS Glas), M.Clin.Dent in Paediatric Dentistry (QMUL), MPaed Dent (RCS Gas), FDS (RCS Glas), Cert Dental Sedation and Pain Management (UCL)

Mr Kandiah qualified from Cardiff Dental Hospital in 2000 and has held various Senior House Officer positions in dentistry. He sought specialisation in Paediatric Dentistry at Royal London Dental Hospital and completed his Specialist Registrar training to be awarded a Membership in Paediatric Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons, England and entered the specialist list in paediatric dentistry in 2008. In 2010 after further training in paediatric dentistry at Eastman Dental Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital he was awarded a fellowship in paediatric dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow.

His areas of specialist interest are management of anxious children, oral surgery, management of dental anomalies, dental trauma and care of medically and physically compromised patients.

He is currently:

  • Clinical Lead for Dental and Maxillofacial Services at SASH
  • Training Programme Director for HE, London & KSS in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Deputy chair for Black Asian Minority Ethnic Staff network (BAME)
  • Chair Mid Surrey Section, British Dental Association (BDA).

Ms Marshall completed her dental undergraduate training at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and has held dental core training posts in oral and maxillofacial surgery and paediatric dentistry across London and the South East. She completed her speciality training in 2017 whilst working at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, and her special interests include; dental trauma, dental management of medically compromised children and child safeguarding.  

Referrals

Referrals from general dental practitioners are received electronically and triaged via the Vantage Rego referral pathway.

Referrals can be received from general practitioners electronically via the electronic referral service.

Referrals for vulnerable children can be received from social workers, health visitors, and family support workers electronically using the vulnerable children dental referral form

Incomplete referrals will not be accepted.
