Awarded a Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accreditation for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust provides an Endoscopy service at East Surrey Hospital and Crawley Hospital.

We provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopy procedures. These include Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, ERCP and Bronchoscopy. This is a high-volume unit performing approximately 15,000 procedures per year.

An endoscopy is a technique used to examine of any part of the interior of the body through an optical viewing instrument. This can be through the mouth into the stomach (gastroscopy), through the anus into the large bowel (colonoscopy) (Flexible Sigmoidoscopy), or through the nose into the lungs (bronchoscopy).

Another examination that is performed by the endoscopy staff is ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). A dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts using a flexible, video endoscope. Then X-rays are taken to outline the bile ducts and pancreas.

The standards of the unit are high and we maintain a rigorous, prospective audit.

The measured outcomes of the endoscopy procedures, including the successful completion of the procedure and patient comfort scores, all exceed the highest standards laid down by the British Society of Gastroenterology.

The aim of the Endoscopy service is “to provide high quality patient and client-focused services through well trained staff with high levels of motivation and team morale.

Core Values

The unit’s aim is to provide the highest standard of care for all our patients, regardless of age, ability, race, culture, religion and sexual orientation.

We will care for our patients and visitors, as we ourselves would wish to be treated.

Despite our patients’ short stay, we aim to meet their needs and, where necessary, will continue to care for them through the community nursing service.

An open attitude is encouraged in which information is shared with patients wherever possible, being mindful of the importance of patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act. We will ensure the patient is treated in privacy and with dignity.

We believe in working together as a team. Supporting and respecting each other, we are aware that everyone’s contribution is of value to our overall performance.

The unit promotes and facilitates staff professional development.

We welcome all comments and suggestions as we are constantly looking for ways to improve our service.

Paediatric procedures are not performed on the unit. (no patient under 16 years).  Paediatric patients are referred to other centres for procedures.
