Our thoracic medicine team offers a wide range of diagnostic services and treatments for adult lung disease for the whole population of SASH.

The respiratory team is recognised nationally as a centre for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and, within the south-east region, East Surrey Hospital has the shortest length of stay for in-patients with COPD and the lowest readmission figures.

Its Home Ventilation Service is unique and provides equipment and support to more than 200 patients within their own homes.

Among the respiratory symptoms treated are airways disease such as asthma; COPD; bronchiectasis; lung and pleural cancers; pulmonary infections, such as TB and pneumonia; pulmonary embolism; pulmonary hypertension; sleep apnoea; respiratory failure; and interstitial lung disease, such as asbestosis.

In-patient care is at East Surrey Hospital only, while outpatient clinics are held at both East Surrey, Crawley, Horsham and Caterham Dene hospitals.

Patients requiring thoracic surgery are referred by our consultants to two thoracic surgeons from St George’s, Hospital, Tooting – Mr Ian Hunt and Miss Carol Tan – who hold a clinic at East Surrey Hospital on Tuesday mornings. Surgery is carried out at St George’s Hospital.
