Professor Abhay Rane, OBE MS FRCS FRCS(Urol)
Professor Abhay Rane was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the 2014 Honours List for services to laparoscopic surgery, being the only urologist to date to be specifically so honoured.
He is an elected member of the Executive Council, Trustee and Surgical Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Professor Rane is also elected to the Board of the European Section of Uro – Technology (ESUT) of the European Association of Urology and is a Director of the Endourological Society. He serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons exit examination for British and international urologists in training.
He is Visiting Professor at Canterbury Christ Church University, and holds adjunct Professor positions at the University of Southern California and at the Icahn School of Medicine, New York.
Professor Rane has 204 publications in several peer-reviewed journals, eight book chapters and has edited eight textbooks in urology; in addition, he is credited with over 400 presentations in national and international meetings. As course director, he has conducted a number of British, European and North American symposia/masterclasses in laparoscopic surgery.
Nominated to the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Urology International and the Journal of Endourology, he advises the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and was selected to represent United Kingdom urology on the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee. He is chairman of the Southern Laparoscopic Urology Group, a peer review group, to promote safe laparoscopic urological practice.
Professor Rane has spearheaded the acquisition of a state-of-the-art British robot at Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust which will be used by all surgical specialties.
