Dr Alberto Villanueva is a consultant radiologist at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust with a special interest in thoracic, cardiac and oncological radiology and considerable experience in lung cancer screening.
He is a former officer of the Spanish Navy Medical Corps with 22 years’ experience as a consultant radiologist has and has practiced in various places in Spain and for the past four years in the UK. Dr Villanueva trained in Radiology at Saint Pau University Hospital, Barcelona, with sub-specialty training in thoracic imaging and worked for 11 years as consultant radiologist at University Clinic of Navarre, four of them as clinical lead for chest radiology.
On moving to the UK for family reasons he worked at Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital, both linked with Papworth Hospital.
Dr Villanueva likes teaching, and research having previously practiced as an assistant professor in the Medical School of the University of Navarre in Spain for 11 years. He has been lead author on 40 peer reviewed publications, presented 150 scientific papers at national and international meetings and has received many grants and awards.
Dr Villanueva undertakes US guided fine needle aspiration cytology of the neck, reports on a large amount of oncology cases and has been asked to participate in the SUMMIT lung cancer screening project led by University College London beginning in February 2019.
