Orthoptics is the study of how the eyes move, align, and work together, and how they coordinate with the brain to produce clear and comfortable vision.
What is an Orthoptist?
Orthoptists are highly trained allied healthcare professionals within the ophthalmology (eye care) team. They specialise in assessing and managing conditions affecting eye movements, eye alignment, and visual development in both children and adults. Orthoptists work closely with ophthalmologists and optometrists, providing expert input across a wide range of eye conditions.
Orthoptists diagnose and manage patients of all ages and abilities, working both independently and as part of multiprofessional and multidisciplinary teams. They provide specialist expertise in eye movement disorders and children’s visual development and work across different specialties within the trust, contributing to improved patient care and wellbeing.
Orthoptists are trained to assess and support children and adults, including those with Special Educational Needs, adapting assessments to meet individual needs.
When you may be referred
You may be referred to the orthoptic department if you experience symptoms such as double vision, blurred vision, or overlapping or “ghosted” images. These symptoms can be linked to problems with eye alignment, focusing, or coordination between the eyes. At your appointment, the orthoptist will discuss your symptoms in detail, including when they started and whether there are any noticeable triggers or patterns.
Children can be referred via the GP, Optometrist, Paediatric team and community services following an assessment with a health visitor or school screening.
What to bring to your appointment?
You are welcome to attend with a friend or relative for your appointment and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring with you any glasses that are worn and your most recent glasses prescription.
