Ophthalmology

Our ophthalmology team serves all of the SASH geographical area and will also provide treatment for patients in the East Grinstead area with retinal disorders.

Every year, around 45,000 patients are seen by our doctors, including children, as we have a consultant specialising in paediatrics and a dedicated paediatric operating list.

We perform around 3400 operations every year at both East Surrey and Crawley Hospitals, with around 98% of procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic. For patients with special needs or phobias, we will offer surgery under general anaesthetic.

At East Surrey Hospital, there is a dedicated theatre for local anaesthetic such as cataracts, retinal surgery and oculoplastic surgery and a separate theatre for general anaesthetics for cataract, retinal, paediatric and glaucoma surgery. There is also a dedicated treatment room for the treatment for macular degeneration.

In Crawley hospital’s day centre, local anaesthetic procedures are carried out for cataracts, glaucoma and oculoplastic conditions, and some general anaesthetics operations are also done there.

“Over the past 2 years, my husband has been a regular visitor at East Surrey, particularly the Ophthalmology department, where he is always treated so well and very efficiently. The clinic is always so busy and the staff are under considerable pressure due to the amount of patients but always have time to help and advise. Each time I go, I give thanks for the NHS - and count myself fortunate to be so near to a good hospital.”
