Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) have announced that its Chair, Dr Anita Donley, has decided not to seek a further term of office and will step down when her current term comes to an end on 30 November 2026.
Anita has served as Trust Chair since December 2024, providing leadership and oversight during a period of significant change and challenge.
During her tenure, she has overseen the appointment of a new Chief Executive and the development of a much-strengthened Board and played a key role in continuing to build the Trust's partnerships across the wider health and care system. Under her leadership, the Trust has continued to improve services for patients, invest in its workforce and infrastructure, and work collaboratively with partners to deliver better outcomes for local communities.
Speaking about the decision, Dr Anita Donley said:
"It has truly been a privilege to serve as Trust Chair over the last two years and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, as well as being hugely grateful to the dedicated staff, volunteers and partners who work tirelessly to provide high-quality care for our patients and neighbourhood communities every day. I have also really enjoyed working with my outstanding colleagues on the Board.
"After careful personal consideration, I have decided not to seek a further term. This feels like the right time to step aside and allow new leadership to support the Trust through the next phase of its exciting journey."
Andrew Hines, Trust Chief Executive, said:
"On behalf of everyone at SASH, I would like to thank Anita for her outstanding commitment, leadership and support. Her guidance has helped steer the Trust through some of its most challenging periods, with a clear and continued focus always on delivering the best possible care for our patients.
"She has been a passionate advocate for our staff, patients and local communities throughout, and her contribution to the Trust will leave a lasting legacy. We wish her every success for the future."
Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery, Regional Chair, NHS England in the South East, said:
"Anita has made an outstanding contribution to Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust during a period of significant change and progress. Through her thoughtful leadership, commitment to partnership working, and unwavering focus on patients, staff and local communities, she has helped strengthen the Trust and position it well for the future. On behalf of NHS England, I would like to thank Anita for her dedication and service and wish her every success in the future."
The process to appoint a successor will begin in due course in line with NHS appointment processes.
