Medical microbiology is a department within pathology that is concerned with the diagnosis and management of infectious disease. Clinical samples are analysed for evidence of, or immunity to, micro-organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.
The department consists of a diagnostic laboratory, which is located at Crawley Hospital, and clinical service, which is based at East Surrey Hospital. The department is committed to providing and maintaining the highest quality of laboratory service, clinical support and infection control advice for the diagnosis and management of infections, taking into account current legislation, national guidelines and the needs and requirements of its users, whilst operating within available resources. The department is accredited to ISO 15189:2012, the internationally recognised standard for medical laboratories, by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
The department provides a comprehensive microbiology and microbial serology service to local hospitals (including East Surrey Hospital) and surrounding general practice, processing in excess of 200,000 specimens per year. A broad range of diagnostic investigations are offered with samples referred to an accredited reference laboratory where required. Laboratory procedures are based on UK National Standards for Microbiology Investigations, which are published by Public Health England (PHE).
The laboratory is staffed by Biomedical Scientists (BMS), who are registered and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA). The laboratory is approved to provide technical training by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS). The department is led by three Consultant Microbiologists, who provide clinical advice and lead the Trust’s Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship programmes.
