Patients requiring medical admission
A new falls clinic is available at East Surrey Hospital’s Chipstead Clinic on the first Friday of the month and is run by Dr Theodora Giokarini-Royal, consultant in care of the elderly, clinical lead in orthogeriatrics and falls. The clinic’s aim is to provide a holistic approach through a comprehensive geriatric assessment and offers each patient a one hour slot.
Prior to attending the falls clinics the majority of the patients would have had a CT brain, a 24 hour tape and a set of bloods, including bone profile. The clinic aims to be a one stop service; however, those patients that require further follow up will be seen in Dr Giokarini-Royal’s care of the elderly clinics at East Surrey and Crawley Hospital respectively.
Referral to the falls clinic can be made via a letter addressed to Dr Theodora Giokarini-Royal. Referrals can be made by the GPs or the community falls teams.
Criteria for referral to the falls clinic must include age over 65, the patient must be able to mobilise with or without walking aids, and he/she must be willing to attend.
Referral indications include:
- Unexplained fall
- Recurrent falls (over 1 in 1 year)
- Fall that led to injury
- Fall associated with loss of consciousness
Referral exclusions include:
- Patients requiring physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy assessment only (they should be referred directly to the appropriate services)
Patients with suspected vestibular problems requiring vestibular assessment (they should be referred directly to the vestibular clinics which are run by ENT)
