Swapping his desk at East Surrey Hospital for six days in the saddle is keen cyclist Jonathan Parr who heads off on a charity cycle ride across the Pyrenean Mountains this month.
The Merstham resident hopes his 400 mile journey will raise over a thousand pounds for Redhill and Reigate YMCA.
Jonathan will take a break from his job at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and fly out to Biarritz on July 13. He and 40 others, including friends from the local ‘Team Cake’ cycling group will then make their way across the Pyrenees and peddle into Barcelona 6 days later.
To get some hill climbing practise the 42 year old has been extending his commute to work with some early morning cycle rides to the top of Box Hill. Jonathan said: “I rode from Redhill to Amsterdam two years ago but that was a lot flatter, this time it’s a much bigger challenge. I have never done 6 consecutive days of cycling and I must admit that doing that over the Pyrenees as well is pretty daunting, but my main fear is the camping – I am not a huge fan!”
The money raised will be used to support the Sovereign Centre in Woodhatch. Jonathan added: “The centre provides wonderful facilities for children and young people with complex needs and disabilities and relies solely on fundraising and donations. It’s really great to be able to support such a worthwhile local cause.”
