Diabetes care

Diabetes Mellitus is the full title of the condition more commonly referred to as 'diabetes'.

It is not uncommon and affects at least 2% of the population; currently estimates are of over one million sufferers in the UK.

It is a condition where the body has difficulty creating useful energy from food eaten. The breakdown of carbohydrates in food creates glucose. Glucose is also stored within the body; as a result, levels of glucose in the blood can fluctuate causing sufferers symptoms and complications.

Those with the condition are affected for life; although there is extensive research being undertaken, it is unlikely that a cure will be found for many years.

A great deal of information about diabetes is available in books and on the Internet, though this information is generalised and every individual will need specific advice.

If you are being treated at SASH for the condition, the hospital Diabetes service together with your GP and Practice Nurse will support you.
