The midwife
We have both female and male midwives who are qualified to give advice and look after you during pregnancy, labour and after birth (up to 28 days).
They are able to recognise abnormal or potentially abnormal conditions needing referral to a doctor and to carry out emergency measures in the absence of a doctor.
There are midwives working with most general practitioners (GPs) practices in the East Surrey and Crawley/Horsham district.
They run antenatal clinics based at various GP surgeries and work as teams in areas Redhill/Reigate, Tandridge, Dorking, Horley, Crawley and Horsham. To contact a midwife in your area phone the following numbers:
- Redhill Team 01737 768511 Ext 6822
- Horley Team 01293 772681
- Dorking Team 01737 231965
- Tandridge Team 01883 331515
- Community Midwives Horsham 01403 227017 (08.30-09.30 then answerphone)
- Community Midwives Crawley 01293 600300 Ext 3631 (08.30-0.930 then answerphone)
If you ring your surgery they can put you in touch with your team of midwives. If you are in the early stages of pregnancy and would like some advice you can go direct to your midwife.
The midwife will arrange to visit you at home following the birth of your baby.
The visits will be as frequent as you need, depending on how you and your baby are progressing. You can discuss your needs with them and arrange when they will call again.
They will tell you how to contact them if a problem arises between the arranged visits. Your health visitor will be informed when the midwife has completed their visits.
Students
Training future members of the health professions would not be possible without the cooperation of mothers, which is greatly appreciated.
If you have any queries or objections regarding students, please tell your midwife; your wishes will, of course, be respected.
The obstetrician
The obstetrician is a qualified doctor with specialist knowledge and experience in the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth.
There are several obstetric consultants, each with a team of doctors working with them.
The consultant or one of her/his team will see you antenatally if you wish to see them, or if there is a problem identified by your midwife or GP.
During labour and birth he/she will only be involved if a problem arises.
The paediatrician
The paediatrician is a qualified doctor with specialist knowledge and experience in the development and care of babies and children.
There are several paediatric consultants, each with a team of doctors. They are always available to deal with any concerns regarding your baby.
The physiotherapist
The physiotherapist is trained to deal with posture, back care and the problems of joints and muscles.
If you are having problems, please discuss them with your midwife or ask your GP for a referral to the physiotherapist.
They will advise on questions relating to exercise during pregnancy. Physiotherapists also visit the postnatal wards to teach exercises to help your body recover from the birth.
The social worker
The social worker is trained to help with any social anxieties or family difficulties, and can advise on financial issues such as benefits.
You can contact them via the hospital switchboard or by asking a midwife or doctor.
The health visitor
The health visitor is a nurse who has undergone further training and is an expert in child development and healthcare.
They visit people at home and work in the GP's surgery/health centre, giving general health advice and monitoring the development of your child until school age.
They work closely with your midwife and GP, and will visit you at home after your baby is born.
If you would like to meet your health visitor before the birth, please contact her at your GP's surgery.
