Early pregnancy

Nausea and vomiting

Caused by early pregnancy hormones. This need not be in the morning and can occur at any time. Generally this will stop or at least improve by your 16th week of pregnancy.

You can help symptoms by:

  • eating a dry biscuit with a drink before rising out of bed;
  • eating little and often, rather than large meals three times a day;
  • trying products containing ginger can help;
  • avoiding spicy and fatty foods;
  • avoiding trigger factors that may bring on nausea and vomitting;
  • trying 'seabands' from the chemist's shop.

The effectiveness of each of these remedies will vary from person to person.

Folic acid

Evidence has shown that folic acid can help reduce the incidence of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

It is preferable to take it pre-pregnancy, but it will also be valuable during the first 12 weeks - 400 mcg daily. It is commonly available at chemists.
